Water is essential in the professional cleaning industry! However, water is also a scarcity in many countries and excess use of water is costly both from a financial and environmental perspective.
Across all Nilfisk sites, we strive to use water as efficiently as possible. Especially at our R&D sites, where we have to use a great deal of water each day to test and develop new machines.
This triggered the creativity of a group of employees at our R&D sites in Hadsund, Denmark. They decided to take on the challenge to develop a water recycling system customised for the processes and steps related to R&D.
The first version of the system was implemented more than 20 years ago, and the team has continued to refine and develop it further since then. Today the system recycles approximately 40,000 m3 of water per year, and the capacity keeps growing.
According to Anton Soerensen, Head of Nilfisk R&D in Europe, the solution shows that local creativity can often solve key challenges.
“We have a tradition amongst our employees for challenging ourselves by setting ambitious goals. It’s not at all difficult to get them on board when it comes to finding new ways of reducing our use of energy and water. It is in the DNA of the people here to solve problems and make things better.”
The recycling system cleans the water through admixture and filters. By combining this system with other initiatives to save water, the local R&D site in Denmark has managed to reduce its water consumption with 10% year on year for the past five years.
This has since inspired other Nilfisk sites across the world to implement similar solutions, which are now part of the ongoing sustainability efforts in Nilfisk R&D. So, what started as a creative idea at a local site has now grown into having a long-term impact across the Nilfisk business.
